Paper Cup Passion Earns Collector a Place in Global Record Books

As of December 2025, Sunil had amassed an impressive collection of 858 paper cups. Given his continuing passion for adding new items, the number has likely increased further since then. His collection is notable not only for its size but also for its diversity. It includes paper cups from 31 different countries, ranging from miniature 5 ml cups to large 500 ml jumbo-sized variants.

According to Sunil, his enthusiasm for preserving unique objects dates back to his childhood. While studying in the fifth grade, he developed an interest in collecting postage stamps, old coins, and matchbox labels. Over time, that curiosity transformed into a lifelong passion.

“Childhood curiosity gradually became my obsession,” Sunil said. “I have collected everything from razor blade covers to airline boarding passes, tea bags, and coffee mugs.”

Before gaining recognition for his paper cup collection, Sunil had already established himself as a prominent collector through an extensive collection of telephone cards. In 2013, he set a world record with 5,986 telephone cards.

The inspiration for that collection came in 1997 when he noticed an unusual telephone card from Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in the wallet of his brother, who worked in the merchant navy. That single discovery sparked a collecting journey that lasted 15 years. During that period, Sunil accumulated more than 12,000 telephone cards representing 245 countries.

Although his telephone card record was later surpassed by a collector from Canada, Sunil did not allow the setback to discourage him. Instead of attempting to reclaim the same title, he shifted his full attention to collecting paper cups. His dedication and persistence ultimately enabled him to achieve global recognition once again.
